‘Trapped in the Image’

We are surrounded by images. Ever since we, as a species, first started making marks on cave walls, images have existed alongside our evolution as means to help comprehend and enrich the world. Now in the digital era, never before has the creation, manipulation and distribution of images been so widespread and deeply engrained into our lives. Everywhere you look images compete for our attention, each one trying to shout out above the white noise of all the others. From the billboard to the postage stamp, the cinema screen to the smartphone, they manage to reach all corners of the modern world. They have a seductive power; whether it is a painting, a photograph, film or video game, we are absorbed into this ‘other’ two dimensional world they create. Yet images, as well as being representative, can also misrepresent, distort, and even totally fabricate reality, but their seductive power remains. In a world now largely mediated by screens, we have to ask ourselves, what is real? The distinction between genuine and fake, truth and falsehood has become obscured.
It may seem strange, with the likes of Photoshop, advanced video editing software and now even virtual reality all being potential tools in the contemporary artist’s/creative’s toolbox, that two painters have decided to make work about this. But with the majority of imagery nowadays coming through the lens and/or screen, can painting provide an alternative, arguably more authentic vision?

‘Trapped in the Image’ brings together the work of two young emerging artists, both of which in some way draws attention to the fact of being an image and, to images in general. Each, asserts the two dimensional nature of the picture plane as well as the illusory depth behind it. Integrating flat, geometric sections of colour alongside perspectival and spatial elements, both artists play with pictorial space. Furthermore, they are in some way concerned with the cross-over between ‘the real’ and the image; neither artist thinking of them as two discrete categories, rather more in terms of a mutual symbiotic relationship where one affects the other. This exhibition hopes to ask questions about the nature of image consumption as well as the necessary implications on our experience.

Jacob and Steve have recently returned from a two month travelling stint in the Far East and have attempted to incorporate this Eastern influence into their latest bodies of work.
